Local School Sets Standards for Excellence In The Classroom

Philadelphia, PA, August 9, 2011 – The Philadelphia Academy Charter School announced today its Pennsylvania Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) status for the 2010-2011 school year, meeting all 17 of the school’s targets. The school improved its reading and mathematics performance and participation goals, and also had a 100 percent graduation rate this year.

“We strive to emphasize character development and work ethic at our school, ” said Larry Sperling, CEO of Philadelphia Academy Charter School. “We want our students to take pride in their work and challenge themselves to improve with each test or activity. We’ve come a long way, and our test scores are a reflection of the positive direction the school is headed.”

In the past three years, the school has consistently increased its test scores and attendance rate among students. Attendance went from 72 percent to 96 percent in three years. In 2009-2010 to 2010-2011, the high schools math scores went from 27 percent to 54 percent and reading scores increased from 46 percent to 67 percent. In terms of overall improvements, test scores K-12 increased to 82.5 percent in math and 74.9 percent in reading. These performance increases were based on numerous new student-focused programs the school now offers, providing the necessary tools for students to succeed. Some enhancements include the $1,000,000 high-tech learning center for students, providing advanced technology coursework and increased delivery of math, science and reading curriculums; the introduction of new academic electives, including courses on Anatomy/Physiology, AP U.S. History, Calculus, Freshwater Ecology, Robotics, Photography, Psychology and Zoology; and much more.

The school even offers incentives to its students. Those students that receive either a proficient or advanced score in math and reading receive a complimentary day off, courtesy of Mr. Sperling.
